Mother’s Love

Artists used to go into hiding for many months at a time to develop collections that would be unveiled at a gallery event. In our new world of daily social media demands, it is often one piece at a time that is released. My Mother’s Love Collection will grow over the years: a combination of animals that have touched my heart both in Australia and Africa.

This gallery may include newer works not yet available in the shop.

“Mothers Care”

35 X 26cm (14” X 10”)

It was the Samburu spotter that alerted us to lions being in the area, he could tell from the behaviour of the elephants rustling the bushes with their trunks. We circled back and soon found this lioness with her two cubs, gently giving one of them a bath while nestled in thick brush to get out of the hot sun. What a privilege to witness such a deeply affectionate moment in the wilds of Kenya.

If you are interested in acquiring prints of this very special painting, please let me know.

“Mothers Nurture”

35 X 26cm (14” X 10”)

We grow up watching cartoons and movies with Elephants stomping through the forests and jungles. Experiencing them in the wild is something else entirely. They move so silently, it’s like they are gliding. Eating is a different story, they reach up and pull down branches that crash to the ground to feed the rest of the family. It’s all teamwork all of the time: crossing rivers, protecting their young and respecting their elders.

Elephants are mesmerising to watch in the wild and this mother, lunching with her playful baby was so special.

“Devoted Mother”

33 X 45cm (13” X 18”)

Under her watchful gaze, her children feasted with exuberance on the antelope ten times their size. I have no concept of how far she had to drag that food to them, but she was full of pride. We watched as the little ones bounced around in delight and repeatedly, as needed, she would gently drag their feast back into the shade of the big tree.

It was only when the little ones had eaten their fill that she began looking after her own hunger while the kids licked each other clean. Eventually, she joined them at the base of the tree and stretched out in contentment. Within seconds her two cherubs were there for cuddles.

I so enjoyed reliving this story while painting “Devotion” for my Mother’s Love Collection.

Only 7,100 cheetahs are thought to be living in the wild today, and their survival is in doubt. Cheetahs have disappeared from about 90% of their original range in Africa, and are extinct in Asia except for a single, isolated group of about 50 animals in central Iran. Action for Cheetahs In Kenya is promoting the conservation of cheetahs through research, awareness, and community participation in Kenya.

Watercolour of a Wallaby Mother and Joey hugging by Kelly Ryner

“Mother Protector”

35 X 26cm (14” X 10”)

The joy of seeing little wallaby joey’s hanging out of their mother’s pouch is only surpassed by seeing them out and about exploring the world around them; under their mother’s watchful eye and hopping into their mother’s arms for a kiss and a cuddle. Little Lilly is all grown up now, with her very own little girl. Violet is just as brave and curious as her mother ever was at this young age.

The Original Painting is available. This is an absolute one-off, no prints will be made.
