Red Rabbit Farm
Late in 2020 an ad popped up on Paul’s computer featuring the sale of a beautiful little farm on the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales a few weeks into a holiday we were taking north of Sydney. It was everything we had ever fantasized about owning one day, so we hopped down the coast to have a look. It was love at first sight. Within a matter of hours, we had chucked our plans to return to Los Angeles and chose instead to settle in this little corner of paradise.
Once upon a time, this farm was thriving with orchards of apples, stone fruits, berries, and nut trees. Now there are some remnants of the orchards, but there’s a lot of open land surrounded by beautiful bushland, a babbling creek with its own natural spring. Half of our property line is shared with a 100-acre conservation property teaming with wildlife that we get to enjoy as our fields are a favourite grazing spot for the many grass eaters that hide away amongst the trees during the day.
We enjoy the apples, pears and plums that grow here, sharing them with the wildlife and when we have too much for ourselves we give them to our local schools. Our true passion revolves around the wildlife and making sure they feel safe and happy here. We are planting more native trees that provide food for the stunning birds that like to visit along with nesting boxes since so many of the big old trees that would have provided them with hollows over the years were destroyed in the massive fire at the beginning of 2020.
We’ve also created happy habitat areas, where there is a bit of that natural mess they like hiding and nesting in and lots of little watering holes. There are many cattle and sheep farms in this community, so having farmland that welcomes the kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and birds is a special gift we can provide.
